Tips To Manage Your Time As A Full Time Web Entrepreneur

A challenge a lot of people face when/if they take that jump to a full time web entrepreneur is managing their time. Working for yourself isn’t like working for a boss, it takes discipline and some may find once they get there, they don’t have it.

time managementDon’t worry, for those of you that are planning on making the jump or have made the jump and are having trouble, I have some tips and strategies for you. By managing your time and becoming more productive, you can make more money and help your websites thrive.

These strategies can also help you even if you aren’t planning to become a full time web entrepreneur. These strategies can be applied to your current websites as well to try and help you boost your productivity/time management on them as well.

Schedules And Routines – A routine is arguably the universal factor that can truly help make your websites successful. What a routine does is gets you set working for a specific amount of time each day and can help make you feel more used to working at home. What I mean, is most people come from a work environment and are used the a structured work schedule (schedules, meeting, deadlines and the like). What a routine does is create a “structured” environment that you as a ex employee are familiar with.

A schedule can help create a routine. You can budget your time with a schedule and use the schedule to set a routine (unless there is another reason you work form X time to Y time and then have a break from X to Y). By using a schedule you not only structure your time properly but make sure you don’t have work conflicts and end up being able to work less than you’d have liked to in any given day.

Time Deadlines – Setting deadlines for yourself is another great way to manage your time at home. By setting deadlines for certain things and working towards them you set goals for yourself. What these goals do is make you somewhat more focused and motivated to complete tasks. Even if its something simple, a deadline can go a long way to making sure it gets done.

Work Locations - Where you work is every bit as important as how much work you do, and it can also tie in with how much work you do. I wrote a post about work ergonimics a long time ago (in March actually) and it still holds. Making sure the place(s) you work are optimized to help you be more productive can save you a ton of time. If there are less distractions and it is easy for you to work there, you’ll see your productivity rise (and save a bundle of time on projects as a result).

work buddyFriendly Support And Encouragement (Work Buddies) – Work buddies are a great way to keep on track with your work. Basically it is finding other like minded people that are doing the same thing as you do and helping each other. What the idea is, is that you and your “work buddy” motivate each other. You talk to each other and try and push each other to get goals done, or do certain pieces of work. This is mutually beneficial as you and your work buddy both get more work done (if you’re the type of person that takes that kind of encouragement positively).

Wrap-Up

Implementing any of these strategies should help boost your productivity and time management. Not all of the strategies work for everyone. If you try one and find it doesn’t/isn’t working, try another. Each person is unique so the strategies that do work for you may not work for someone else.

Do you guys have any good time management/productivity strategies?

Great tips… people are absolutely positively or negatively influenced by their work environment. A cluttered work environment leads to negative energy, which doesn’t allow for clarity of thought. Clarity brings innovation and breakthroughs.

@ Bruno - and how much have your websites grown as a result ;)

@ Joe - that it does!

@ Lawrence - he he, thanks

@ Ron - Yup, agreed, you can fix the negative by being ergonomically smart. What this does is allows you to stay more focused and leave that “negative energy” behind.

@ WebTrafficROI - thanks :D

@ Lucas - thank you.

I work part-time to cover my bills and have to take care of my son one day a week. My girlfriend just started her phd program and he goes to daycare there twice a week - those are my two days a week that I get to work from 9-5.

When I do work, I either do so at home (where I can get distracted) or go to a coffee shop with wifi where I seem to find more focus when I can plugin my tunes and just work away.

Unfortunately due to being sick for over a week and entertaining job interviews for a job I really wasn’t interested in, I’m behind on a deadline for a project that I set for myself by two weeks :(
