The Scoop On The Entrecard Sale

As some of you may have heard, Entrecard is up for sale. I honestly was a bit shocked when first hearing it so I gave a call to my buddy Graham (Entrecards owner). After talking with Graham for a while, I can say I can see from his point why he would list it for sale. It is too early to draw any conclusions yet but I don’t personally feel like the website will sell.

The first reason is a cash reason, while it’s a great startup, I don’t feel someone will pony up what its worth outright. Value wise, if worked on properly Entrecard could be a very profitable website to own, but people may just not want to take the risk.

The other reason is I don’t feel Graham is ready to sell yet. I think he’s worked hard to build a great product and doesn’t want to let that go. He’s put a lot of time and money into building the service and I would describe it like his baby, I think selling the site is a last option and he will find some other way to hang onto it.

What Does This Mean For Entrecard

No one can predict exactly what this means for Entrecard but I do think a few people will jump ship after seeing this. People believe in Graham and the work he’s done and if they think he’s coping out they could see it as a potential decrease in the quality of Entrecard. They’ll think if he’s trying to sell, he won’t work as hard putting new features and services into Entrecard and improving it. I for one don’t agree with this purely due to the fact that I do think it will sell (so Graham will stay behind the project) and that even if he’s putting it up for sale, he’s going to continue to improve it no matter what.

Also, if a bad new owner buys the site they could run it into the ground ruining a great service. I think the fear of this will push some people away but they’ll come back after they figure out that the odds are against Graham selling Entrecard (in my humble opinion)

I for one am not taking the widget down quite yet. As stated I don’t think Graham will sell, and I don’t think that even if he sells the quality of the website will go down. The best thing we can do now is just wait and see.

What do you guys think about this sale and what do you think will happen to Entrecard in the near future?

It has a good base , lacks a solid business model, if the business model is tweaked it will do well

I doubt it would sell, as I can feel that the owner’s having second thoughts about the sale. I’m not sure about that though. If I were him, I wouldn’t sell the site right now, maybe wait one more year then sell it. Then again, if the owner really wants to get rid of the site, he would.

Hi,

Graham fixed the bid for million dollars. I think it is possible for the GOOGLE only to buy the site

That’s not true, a lot more people than Google have a million dollars. Anyone could “buy” it, but as I said, it won’t happen.

I don’t really know enough about the site to give a great response. The idea behind the site is cool…and I agree with the right model it could be killer. I guess we will have to see what happens with the sale, and ultimately with the direction of the site.

Maybe this will be an opportunity for Graham to find an investor for entrecard and not a sale.

I don’t know much about the business side of things either. I do know he perfected an idea that other sites had tried and now you cannot go for more than a few blogs without seeing the widget.

He may be just trying to get some buzz back in the site…. sometimes it seems a sitepoint auction is cheaper than paying for a bunch of reviews!! This way people are writig about it for free and he only has to pay one fee!

EntreCard’s hay day is over. It was good when it first started, but it got too out of control too quickly. They should have had a better mechanism for guaranteeing quality content. I wrote about this earlier today.
