The More Complex A System The More Complex The Cheating
I’ve always said it, and its so true, “the more complex a system becomes, the more complex the method people use to break it will become”.
What do I mean by this? Well I was reading around about spamming twitter, thinking about Entrecard’s “market” and finally Shoemoney posted a wonderful bit of linkbait about SEO having no future.
Explain Please….
Okay, so, if Entrecard starts up their credit market and starts banning farmers, what will happen is the farmers will get smarter. They will make it look legit, they will figure out ways to break the system.
With any popular site/software there is the underbelly. This is a group of people who are trying to break the system for their own benefit.
SEO is manipulating search rankings for your benefit. If Google starts changing their algorithm, don’t you think those people will adapt their tactics to suit this. An industry of “beating” a system will always adapt to a systems changes.
That being said, for a system to beat that industry the manpower that they would have to devote would be massive. As a result most just let it happen.
If Twitter wanted to kill all the spam accounts it would take up server space, staff hours and probably not be worth it to them. Instead they can take out a fair number, but some will always survive.
The same goes with a system like Entrecard. They may be able to wipe out some credit farmers but some will always be there (don’t be surprised if there aren’t already some there).
Think about it….

I think any system is going to be gamed by spammers or marketers who try to front their information above others who more deserve it. In many ways, I see what you’re saying… but too I also think that the more complex a program is, the easier it is for people to exploit it undetected. Cool post… might get people to thinking. Dugg + Stumbled.
Thanks Garry. This is true, a simple system can only be gamed in simple ways, and is as a result easily detectable. A complex system can be gamed multiple ways and as a result is harder to detect.
