The Google Webmaster Guidelines

It has been a while since I last read the Google Webmaster Guidelines. Basically, what they are, are some basic dos and don’ts for your website that will help you rank better, and will ultimately benefit your website if you read them. If you haven’t yet, or haven’t for a while, re-read them/read them now!

The reason I brought this up is I briefly posted a post about link cloaking. Now, this was pointed out to me by my good friend Garry Conn to be against the Google Webmaster Guidelines. Since it has been quite a while since I’ve read them, I didn’t pick up on this until he mentioned it.

As a result the post was edited to include a warning but ultimately deleted, as to have no chance of steering you guys wrong. What I’m trying to say here is that you should always follow the rules and make sure you are before implementing something, especially if you’re a blogger (you write to an audience, so influence them).

Mistakes happen, and you should look at them exactly as such. As a result you should not dwell on the past but learn from your mistakes and move on to the future….

  1. This really should be the first thing before planning a website for some folks. Knowing what the 900lb gorilla will allow and slap you for is good and allows you to decide white hat or black hat without not knowing the consequences.

  2. @ Ben - Lol, 900 lb gorilla is low-balling its weight. But yeah, definitely a good thing to know for decision making.

  3. yep if u don’t follow the rules you will get banned. So might as well follow the rules it will pay off in the long run.

  4. Thank you for this, I remember getting the link a while ago, but I forgot it was a page from google, therefore, I was not looking in the right place when attempting to find it again. Everyone should try to follow these rules to make the web a more ‘fair’ game

  5. @ Nick - absolutely. Many loose site of the long run, what everyone needs to understand is if you play by the rules, you will make more in the long run than if you cheat and burn out early. There is also the reputation factor to consider.

    @ MySiteComeTrue - Glad I could help.

  6. Nice information. Google is strict. They will ban you and won’t tell you what they banned you for. However when and if you do get banned you should contact them and simply say sorry for whatever has been done and hope that they’ll unban you.

  7. Google is indeed strict, and yeah, if you have a valid case, sometimes they listen, otherwise you have to grovel..
