The Consumer and Your Website

The consumer is a fickle beast at best and the job of any online e-commerce website is to convince the consumer that theirs is the website to buy from. This breaks down into two general factors that can either make the consumer convert (buy a product) or turn a consumer away.

Website Appearance

Based on a websites appearance the consumer will take the initial impression of the service provided. It is just like in real life, you have a few seconds to make your first impression.

Your website should look sleek and professional, and not like it was built in 5 minutes on Frontpage. A professional looking website will put the consumer in the state of mind that they are dealing with an established company and as a result drive up your conversion rates.

There are of course things to avoid when building a website. These are things that will turn a consumer away such as flashing banners. Your website should drive sales, not drive them away! Make your website stand out from its competitors.

Research what others in the niche are doing. If it is working for them, it will probably work for you. The key there though is to make your website unique as well. Build in some design or other factors that separates your site from others and makes the consumer want to go with yours.

Legitimacy of information

The next factor is the content on your website. If the content looks like it has been created by a amateur and doesn’t convince the consumer about their need to buy a product then the consumer will be driven away.

The content should be concise and give the consumer an overview of the product that informs them why they need it. The information should be believable and accurate as well as to give the consumer the feeling that they are dealing with a knowledgeable source.

The information should be complete and the spelling and grammar should be executed perfectly. Any relevant information that will help the consumer buy or learn more about the product is also great and will help your websites in terms of SEO benefits and Adsense quality score.

It is your job as a marketer to inform the consumer about what they need and require. Your website is a tool to do this and drive sales.

  4. Good stuff Max, niche research is a great way to get ideas on what is working.

I check out PPC advertisers that have had an ad running for a while; if they are spending money over a longer period of time, then they are surely making money and hence doing something right.

  5. @ Tim - Agreed on the research. That is absolutely right for PPC, that is when you bust out the research tools and grab some keywords ;)

  6. For me the Website Appearance is the hardest part to be distinguished in since I don’t really have the creativity or knowledge or graphic design.
