Shake Off The Stats Bug

profitChecking stats can be a HUGE time waster. I know this because I was once inflicted with the stats bug. Back when I first started out, I was crazy about stats. I analyzed them like crazy (still tend to), but more importantly I checked back again and again to see if there were any changes.

I was literally wasting time checking stats, and this is a thing you guys need to avoid. I know stats are pretty and its fun to check all the graphical representations and analyze your stats all the time but it’s just not worth it.

Your stats will be continue to grow whether you check them or not. You checking them just seems to make things go slower and waste time. I’d recommend if you’re crazy about stats checking them no more than two times a day (you can pick those times, but it’s good to space them out). What this does is still let you “keep on top” of your stats, but not waste a TON of time doing so. The stats will go up whether you watch them or not.

Think about all the time you could save not checking those stats. You can use that time to work on other projects and make more online. There are only so many hours in the day so you have to utilize them. By making more effective use of your time (and not wasting it checking stats again and again), you’ll see your productivity and earnings rise.

It’s a self control thing, I know not everyone does this but a lot of people check their stats way to much. When I took a good look at what I was doing (way back when), I realized how foolish it was and stopped. I’m not saying you shouldn’t constantly analyze your stats (because I do feel that is important, but still not so frequently that it takes away work time), but rather in any case to do with checking stats, purely slow down and do it less often.

You’d be surprised what you can achieve in that time you’ve freed up

I check my stats like 15 times a day. I check my stats to see where my traffic is coming from. If there is nothing new, I go to another website. I don’t spend more than 2 mins if there is nothing new.

Interesting piece of thought. However, the only reason I check my stats is to track where my visitors come from and I’ll try to analyse how they chance upon my site. Do I check it regularly? Pretty often…

I tend to check my stats every time I use the computer. I know it’s a bad habit, but I’ve been working on getting rid of it recently

I was very worried with stats at first while watching symptoms of hot and cold, after my first contest I started to drift from the stats as it was driving me to rely on social media. After divorcing from full time social ho to focus on quality and honest content I saw my stats lifted in many ways. No one will ever be happy with the stats they have as you always want to continue to grow.

This being said set goals and keep an eye on them, but once your out of the 3 month dig in you really should be spending more time on the content, research, networking and marketing.

Great post Max

I do agree, checking stats more then 2 times a day is a time waster. But beginners including me still tend to do this for some odd reson :)

By the way I missed you guys at Toronto Bloggers meet, had a soccer game. I did attend the one held on Thursday at Live restaurant with John Chow and Yaro Starak. It was nice meeting with the local bloggers.

@ axio - I’d cut down. It will save you time. Also if you check less frequently, there is a greater chance that there will be something new ;)

@ Yan - still, if you check them say only twice a day, analysis can mean more (more data to base it off of).

@ Rajaie - good man!

@ Ben - agreed 100%

@ Coolwebdeveloper - It’s nice to see the numbers jump (that’s the reason). I shot you an email about toronto meetups so hopefully we’ll see you there.

I swear by Stats Remote, keeps a nice running total down in the task bar that I can mouseover whenever I’m curious. Also handles accounting and PPC ROI pretty nicely.

Ah I’m a sucker to checking my stats to see how I’m doing. I do agree I need to get out of the habbit so that I can spend my time making more campaigns to make my stats more impressive :)

I can dig it Max, lol….I know many stat whores lol. It’s addicting man but you’re right, it can be a waste of time if you do it too much.

You absolutely right about this one… I am pretty new to blogging and I have just started and I am really checking stats every 4-5 hours or so… it is horrible!
I think once a week will do just fine as one can then get the whole picture

Best regards from Germany
