Popular Posts Revamp
So, I revamped my popular posts section. Now for all of you guys that are saying, “where is it”, it is now recommended posts. The reason I did this is because I feel that this allows me to showcase hand picked work that I think others will enjoy.
The other reason is that the popular posts plugin (at least the one I was using) really isn’t that good. For one, it counted spam comments as comments (even after you delete them) so some of my posts had 2,000+ comments on them. This is a problem because it screws up the whole formula to get the most popular posts. Combine this with a few other kinks and I felt it was time to try it my way.
The advantage to my way is I can hand pick the posts I show. I can truly show my blogs “best content” to a new reader. Also, recommended posts seems less cocky than popular posts. It also differentiates me from a lot of bloggers. So many bloggers have popular posts sections but how many truly have a recommended post section
Do you use popular posts? Maybe you should think about changing to recommended posts, but then again maybe you like popular posts…. What do you think?

Currently I use “Popular Posts”, but after reading this, I think it’s a better idea to do “Recommended Posts”. And the reason why I think it’s better is because of the psychological reasons. People would rather click links and read more posts if it’s recommended for them for their own learning.
Also, I’ve been hand-picking my popular posts ever since I put it up on my site. It’s a good idea that you’re doing that now too.

@ sly - thanks, yeah I feel its a great idea. Will you be changing your blog to match what I did?
Currently I have system generated Most Popular Posts which shows All Time and This Month popular posts. I am happy with it because I am getting lots of clicks on these. Hand picked Recommended Posts soudns like a good idea. I will keep this in mind for future.

It’s certainly good to offer your readers a snapshot of what’s popular in a blog. How do you justify a popular post apart from the no. of responses?
