Partnerships: Do we really need them online?

I feel I got my first blog post started off well, but no user response! So readers, please let me know what you think and comment! That being said lets move onto post number two.

The topic of today’s post is about partnering on the internet. Often in business a partner can be a good thing if your not 100% specialized in your field. But the internet changes this concept, bringing it from real life to a digital age.

Back in the old days you knew your partner and met with him/her face to face. TODAY, that’s been revolutionized by the internet. No longer do you have the classic lunch meeting or brainstorming session. Today you can partner with people from around the globe to complete your ambitious goals.

Now reading this on the surface makes it seem great. But you couldn’t be more WRONG. Don’t get me wrong in some cases an internet partner is a great thing, but there is always risk in a partnership and the internet multiplies this risk. In a digital age your partner is hid behind a computer, and if “crap” hits the fan, there is seldom a way to get at your partner if he/she lives in a far off country that doesn’t share the same laws as your own.

In partnering with someone there are a few dos and don’ts that should be observed strictly.

  • NEVER partner with someone you have known for a short time and are just building trust for
  • Write a detailed agreement with your partner (a Non Disclosure Agreement is always good to)
  • If you do partner with someone, never give them 100% control over YOUR information and finances.
  • Put in safeguards so if something does go wrong you can minimize damage
  • Do a quick rep search on forums and google for the person to find any possible dirt on them.

The above points help choose a partner if you MUST have one in a digital environment. Honestly, I personally would rather outsource to a freelancer or hire someone to do it for me rather than partnering myself. Reason being then I have 100% control and as a result get 100% of the profits!

Some choose to partner because they don’t have the money which is completely understandable but there are always ways to raise capital. You can: Ask family, ask friends, borrow money from an establishment (such as the bank) or in rare cases, get an “angel” investor.

Another point to consider is, what does this “partner” have that I don’t. In most cases you can find you can do what your partner is offering, so there is no need to partner up. In the cases where you can’t and freelance isn’t an option sometimes you will be forced to partner up.

Now don’t get me wrong, partnerships can be a beneficial thing. But in my experience they’re best avoided as I find people that do a lot of hard work like to reap the full rewards of their work, not share them with another person.

That about concludes my blog post number two. Hope you enjoyed it, and ill see you all in a bit when post number three comes out, or please drop me a email or comment, id be happy to talk to ANY and ALL of my readers.
