Increase Your Websites “Stickiness”: Create Resources

Getting visitors to your website is only one part of having a successful website. Another part of this challenge is actually keeping those visitors in your website. This is measured by a bounce rate. A bounce rate is how many of those visitors actually go further than one page (stay on your website). A higher bounce rate means that more people are just bouncing off your website and staying while a lower one means more are staying and actually reading what you have to offer.

Obviously a lower bounce rate is more preferable. If your website is “sticky” it means more people stay on the website and also come back to the website again and again (this reduces your bounce rate). What I want to talk about today is one way to make your website more “sticky” and that is creating resources.

Creating The Resources

The reason you would want to create these resources is to create something people will come back to. You want to create something of quality that people will tell their friends about.

The way I recommend figuring out what you’re going to create your resource about is think about your niche. Is there a problem or some information that is commonly referred to in your niche. By creating a resource about that exact topic, you create something that has a broad reach in your niche and people can legitimately use.

Lists, how tos and the like do well as a resource. So just write one and you’re done half the battle. Your resource is created and all you need to do is promote it to increase visibility and let people know it’s there.

Promoting The Resources

So now that your resource is created you need to let people know about it. The first thing I’d do is create a resources page for your website (if you have multiple resources to share). What this does is let people know of other great resources you’ve created and can really help cross promote your resources. The other thing it allows you to do is place a central link to your resources page on your website or blog to let people know they actually exist.

After you’ve set up where your resources will stay you will want to get to work promoting them. Use social media like StumbleUpon, Digg, Mixx and the like to promote your resources and bring in new people who may find your resources helpful and pass them on.

You can also build links directly to your resources page to try and give them more exposure in the SERPs (search engine ranking placements). If you can get organic traffic to the resource pages you’ll be loving it. The organic people are already looking for that resource so will be thrilled when they find your resource page!

Wrap Up

To wrap up, I feel resources are a great way to make your website or blog more sticky. They aren’t that hard to create and promote and can really add some value to the website in question. If you can provide more value to your visitors they will keep coming back (and perhaps even bring their friends…) and isn’t that what we all want ;)

Does Your Blog Have The Proper Call To Actions?

Do you optimize your website to have people do certain actions, well even if you do, I want to provide a potentially fresh perspective to increase various conversions around your website. I’ll give you guys a hint, all of the points I am bringing up have one thing in common among them that can really help boost your conversion rate. That magical thing is a call to action.

A call to action is literally a word or phrase that urges or “calls” you to complete an action. While they are a must have for affiliate marketing, I find a lot of people leave them out on certain parts of their blogs where they could use them to increase various “actions” that could be completed.

RSS Readership

One factor of a blogging a lot of people seem to worry over is their RSS readership. What they don’t know is by optimizing their RSS subscriptions with a call to action they can increase their ratio of visitors to readers and boost their RSS count easily.

By simply adding a call to action to your RSS subscription areas you can draw people’s attention to them and as a result get them to subscribe. Seriously, all it takes is a “click here to subscribe” or something like that. If you offer a subscription option at the bottom of each post, it’s super easy to just add this line above or below it.

If you’ll notice in my RSS area, I say “Click To Subscribe To My Feed”. This is a simple call to action, but I would wager without it my feed count would be lower than it currently is. If you don’t ask you won’t receive. By telling your visitors to subscribe to your feed believe it or not, more will!

Selling Ads

A call to action can also be applied to selling ad space. On your default banners and advertising page, do you have a call to action to prompt potential sponsors to buy advertising space?

For banners, it can be as simple as a line on them saying “Don’t wait, buy today” or something more complex. Anything that prompts a potential sponsor to get their ad now should help increase the number of sponsors that advertise on your website (assuming that there is interest in the spaces). This could be at the bottom of the banner. In this case you may want to split test calls to action to see what sells more ads (some may work better on your niche’s sponsors than others).

For your advertising page, do you just list your ad spaces and stats? If you don’t have a call to action on this page I look at this like a wasted opportunity. It is so simple to put a few call to actions onto this page. If you simply state after each ad price something like “buy this ad now” or another call to action you ensure that potential sponsors are properly prompted to buy the ad space instead of perhaps just browsing then forgetting about you.

User Interaction

You can also apply a call to action to your users interaction on your website. By putting a call to action on your comments or social media you can increase the numbers of readers that do those actions that make your blog “healthy”.

You can use a call to action to prompt users to comment (for example: “Tell me what you think, comment now”). You can also use these same calls to action to get people to participate in submitting your website to social media websites or any other type of interaction (such as polls) that users can do on your website. It’s just as simple as including that call to action to help prompt users to complete the action.

If You Don’t Have Them Get Them

Calls to action are so simple to include but many don’t. Do you include any calls to action on your website or blog? Well if you don’t take my advice, get them onto the blog or website today! There are definitely other areas of the blog that you could find calls to action useful to use on. What are you waiting for, if you haven’t already, get some calls to action implemented!

The Scoop On The Entrecard Sale

As some of you may have heard, Entrecard is up for sale. I honestly was a bit shocked when first hearing it so I gave a call to my buddy Graham (Entrecards owner). After talking with Graham for a while, I can say I can see from his point why he would list it for sale. It is too early to draw any conclusions yet but I don’t personally feel like the website will sell.

The first reason is a cash reason, while it’s a great startup, I don’t feel someone will pony up what its worth outright. Value wise, if worked on properly Entrecard could be a very profitable website to own, but people may just not want to take the risk.

The other reason is I don’t feel Graham is ready to sell yet. I think he’s worked hard to build a great product and doesn’t want to let that go. He’s put a lot of time and money into building the service and I would describe it like his baby, I think selling the site is a last option and he will find some other way to hang onto it.

What Does This Mean For Entrecard

No one can predict exactly what this means for Entrecard but I do think a few people will jump ship after seeing this. People believe in Graham and the work he’s done and if they think he’s coping out they could see it as a potential decrease in the quality of Entrecard. They’ll think if he’s trying to sell, he won’t work as hard putting new features and services into Entrecard and improving it. I for one don’t agree with this purely due to the fact that I do think it will sell (so Graham will stay behind the project) and that even if he’s putting it up for sale, he’s going to continue to improve it no matter what.

Also, if a bad new owner buys the site they could run it into the ground ruining a great service. I think the fear of this will push some people away but they’ll come back after they figure out that the odds are against Graham selling Entrecard (in my humble opinion)

I for one am not taking the widget down quite yet. As stated I don’t think Graham will sell, and I don’t think that even if he sells the quality of the website will go down. The best thing we can do now is just wait and see.

What do you guys think about this sale and what do you think will happen to Entrecard in the near future?

Youtube Favorite - Scott Richter On Spamming

I was browsing through my older youtube favorites and I stumbled upon a very funny video. It is of Scott Richter (the head of CPAEmpire) interviewed on The Daily Show about his spamming practices. Please note this was done in 2004, so it’s a bit outdated. None the less, it’s very funny, and never ceases to make me laugh each time I watch it.

That being said, now CPAEmpire is a very compliant network (in terms of its practices and standards) and works hard to do its best with advertisers and affiliates (you may want to check it out if you haven’t). I have an fantastic affiliate manager with them (you know who you are ;) ) and have enjoyed working with them so far. Without further ado, prepare to laugh:
