If You’ve Got Nothing To Say, Don’t Say Anything

Honestly, this post is going to be short and simple. If you don’t have anything to say, seriously just don’t post anything. No one wants to read about nothing. People want real information/content from blogs.

These same people can spot filler post from a mile away. It may be okay to write a filler post every so often, we all do, but if it becomes frequent, it’s just annoying. I know this doesn’t apply to everyone, so if it doesn’t apply to you I apologize. If you have nothing to say, just skip the post and focus on writing an even better article for the next one.

What this does is keeps your reputation intact. Instead of becoming the guy that posts garbage, you are still that guy that has great content. I’m sure readers would rather miss a post and get quality content than get a subpar post full of nothing.

So next time you’re minds blank, don’t write some random thing and post it, just skip it. If you have nothing to say, don’t say anything, your readers will thank you for it.

Do you guys feel the same way?

I disagree actually. There are tons of blogs where the “filler posts” become some of their best posts. I’ve read numerous and have heard from numerous bloggers that the posts they just come up with on the top of their head and just throw together quickly when they can’t think of anything else to write about end up being their most commented posts and get the most interaction from their readers.

That may be, but what percentage of those posts are their best ones, how many filler posts go to waste and don’t get anything useful across. As I said, we all do it sometimes, I’m talking about excessive filler posting and basically saying something purely for the sake of saying something, but I definitely see your point…

Thanks for dropping by man

Hey Mattaw,

In some ways I agree and in some ways I disagree. I agree for obvious reasons. I disagree because quality is defined differently to different people. Some people may find extremely valuable while someone else looking at that same post may find it worthless. Value is all in the eye of the beholder whether its on topic or off topic.

I do understand there are some posts that are just completely off tangent and is total garbage that relates to absolutely nothing, but then again, there are people who look at those same posts as worthwhile. I’ve had people tell me they especially prefer to read blogs that are just everything day random bullcrap because to them, its more entertaining and worthwhile than some of the top blogs that actually have content worth reading. It’s the reason celebrity gossip blogs are so famous and its the same reason some blogs with no real value is worth while to some people.

I understand that some people don’t want to have that kind of content on their blog. For example, your blog is valued towards making money. You want to keep it relevant and create value to your readers. But much like shopping for car, what you prefer may not be what your customers want. Your readers may find value in non-related topics as well. I do agree that excessive off-topic filler posts is unnecessary, but some blogs work real well that way. Take a look at John Chow for example.

In the end, its the value of the on topic posts as well as the value of the off topic posts that matters. Whether it provides useful content or just simply entertains the reader, its a value in some form. That’s not so say I don’t understand where you are coming from, but I also see where the writers are coming from too should they choose to continue putting in filler posts.

Hmmmm, I hear you…but honestly, it depends what is a “filler post” to you. Is this a filler post lol. Like someone steven said, different people like different types of content.

What you or I may categorize as filler, others may love. That’s what’s so fun about blogging, people just want you! Great content is important, but that’s different for each blogger and their audience. Not everyone wants a technical thesis all the time.

So, I agree a lil bit, but like the others I also disagree, off the cuff writing is what keeps the blogsphere interesting.

I blogged about that a while ago and I too advised people not to write just to write something. You might loose more readers just by writing a crappy post than by not posting anything.

Hey I’m in the same court as the other commenter’s on this one…… Your post today was practically a filler post yet you are already spurring some interesting conversation.

Ramblings and thoughts in between well laid out informative posts can help you to get to know a blogger and feel part of their world and life.

If you want to see a blog full of filler posts that kind of goes against this see http://www.junkdrawerblog.com/ she regularly gets 60-100 comments per post and they are mainly just rambles about her daily life and a few photos.

Great post…. let’s see some more random posts like this and get us debating in this section.

I have seen people like john chow writing all kind of BS on their blog, what they eat… what they wear.. all rubbish .. nothing related to what actually their blog is all about.
That said we should also not break the readers interest in our blog by not posting anything at all for months just because you cant thing of anything good…
every thing has its pros and cons.

This is spot on for BUSINESS blogs. Some time ago I deleted a whole bunch of posts from the beginning because I felt myself guilty of this.

JunkDrawer and Chow are not real good examples. The junk site has it right in the title and tagline the readers EXPECT it….being more of a personal type blog, it’s fine.

Chow is just an enigma wrapped up in himself LOL. Look way back at the beginning of his stuff…..real content. Now he can do whatever he wants.

The pudding proof in thast one is the thousands of chow wannabees who START with the dinner menu and wonder why they have 2 readers…

Good post :-)

Sometimes it’s difficult to keep the same level on your posts. I think that is not bad to write whatever to “fill” your blog, you could take advantage of this situation to ask something to your readers, to make a poll or just to talk about your weekend…

Sometime is a good idea to give to your readers something different to read.

This is kind of related to my post a few days ago… Anyway, I may have to agree with the other people here - it’s okay to rant/publish filler posts and all that because usually those posts tend to bring up interesting debates.

The only thing that I hate about people posting something when they’ve got absolutely nothing to say is that some of them like rewriting (or worse, copy-pasting) other blogs’ articles. That’s totally ridiculous.
