How To Get Ideas

Inspiration to generate content can be hard to come by. I’ve often sat at a computer for hours with no posts coming to mind, but then it hits you. Once that great post comes to mind your words just seem to flow onto the paper. I have found that there are a few key things you can do to speed up this process and find ideas to generate great content. The following are strategies I use to find content to write about:

Watch some short videos on Youtube - what this does is gets my brain moving. I like using comedy or another “light” video so that my brain is stimulated. Often just doing this gives me an idea right off the bat

Read what others are doing - I’m not saying to copy anyone, but read around, sometimes one story by a person will lead to a connection in your head to a good topic to write about.

Read the newspaper - if you don’t have a story, read the news. It is a goldmine of information that can then be spun off or related to relevant topics. Even if you don’t get anything out of it, you have a reference for later conversation with your friends (it will make you sound smarter  )

Make a web - finally, I also make a brainstorming web. This is where I take a main concept and branch ideas off it. This usually is a great way to garner many post ideas out of one generation form. You’d be surprised what spin offs of some ideas you can get if you make a web.

So with that being said, next time you’re out of ideas, read Moneybites for some inspiration

  2. He he, any specific category you watch?

  3. I got my inspiration by:
    1. Reading other blogs.
    2. Using StrumbleUpon
    3. Using Digg
    4. Watching YouTube Video’s = Not a specific categorie, just random.
    5. Things which suddenly hit me! Things like problems which I had to find a solution for it, a funny video, an fascinating story etc…

  4. My ideas come from reading other blogs and comments, especially, if there is much room for discussion. I read around not only in my niche but other blogs, I just like. This is a great source of inspiration because ideas very often come in my mind when I’m not focused on them because I read these blogs for my pleasure only. Networks work perfect as well, especially when I know exactly what I want to find. I don’t read newspapers (it’s a shame 8)) but I use google alerts not to spend much time on news search.

  5. @ Behrad - I find stumbleupon a decent source, but I find it to be slightly un-targeted for my taste and the lack of control sometimes sends me on tangents. :D

@ July - Google alerts are a good idea. I read the paper with breakfast just to stay up to date. Reading other blogs is also enjoyment for me, although, I am guilty of staying mostly in the niche…

  6. Awesome list.. I get inspiration while going through my old posts.. When I hit a topic that I can add something to, I tend to make a sequel for that post.. The main advantage there is that posts get interlinked and my blog becomes more informative about a specific topic..

    Cheers!
