How To Build A Social Media Profile

One thing I’ve noticed a lot of my friends having problems with is getting their social media profiles off the ground. The network is irrelevant, whether it be Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx or some other social media network, all of them present the same challenge, building a profile.

A lot of people want to use social media to reap the traffic benefits of promoting their websites content through it or just for fun and finding something interesting. In terms of promoting your content through social media you need a strong profile and good content to do so (or a friend that has a strong profile  ). I want to talk about one way that you can build your profiles quickly and still contribute to the social media network of your choice’s community.

The power of social media is in the strength of its users. A network with a small and inactive userbase is not as useful to a web marketer than a booming one with lots of users. You want the maximum exposure and the social media users will help you get it, if you play your cards right.

What I mean is you have to build a network of friends to help get your stuff noticed and promote your content and I want to talk about how to do so.

How To Do It:

Firstly, you should be an active community member. By actually contributing something to the community of your choice you will get noticed and befriend you organically.

It’s like a snowball, after your friends list gets to a certain size, it is much easier to build and sort of just balls out of control, so I want to give some insight about how to get to that tipping point.

Another thing you can do is mass add people. A small percentage of these people may add you back. After doing this, just unfriend everyone, add back your mutual friends, and repeat. This can be viewed as slightly spammy but will get you where you need to go. That being said, this method isn’t for everyone but can be used to build a profile quickly.

A way to increase your add back rate (the percentage of people that add you back as a friend) is to create a small generic message you send out with the friending. You can say something like, “I saw your latest submission and thought it was really cool. I am an avid user and would appreciate you adding me back as a friend. Thanks a lot”. A message just as simple as that will skyrocket the amount of people that add you back.

Active users like to befriend other active users. So after you’ve befriended something don’t walk away. If they ask you to look at something, look at it within reason.

This is slow and takes time. Add a couple friends a day and before you know it you will have a rocking social media profile. As you start you may want to add a bunch of people just to get started but after that I’ve found that slow and steady wins the race.

As you get more friends your submissions will be noticed more and voted up. Your friends will share them and help you promote them bringing you the traffic and votes that you want for whatever you submit.

So what are you waiting for, go out there and start building you social media profiles. Also, if you haven’t yet, subscribe to Moneybites.com (click here)

Being active is key! Make friendships, but just don’t be casual really put time and effort into it. Say more than hi. Keep in touch and build reputation.

I agree, activity is the key here, and I don’t always have the time to dedicate to an active social profile

great topic! another thing that goes hand and hand with the information provided is a good self branding practice… (same icon/avatars everywhere) that way people tend to notice you in the several social networking sites…

You need to be careful with the strategy of adding people randomly to start growing your profile. This could be seen a little spammy…

Hmmmm, I guess I can see how this would work. However, I don’ t know how I feel about the mass add delete method lol.

I’ll just let the people roll, now, if they don’t add me back I may delete, but, I usually just add the people I find interesting at the time so….

Don’t think I’ll be treating the social network community to drive by one night stands lol….

But, the part about being active in the community is totally spot on!

Good article with some good points , but as you have mentioned mass adding friends and removing them can be considered spamming

I do agree that the key to get exposure is to be active with the community. Sending message or buzzing other members is another way to get noticed.

@ Frank - Agreed, as stated, users like other active users. Friending someone is getting your foot in the door, to stay you have to be active.

@ Sell Porn - it’s about time management. It doesn’t take much it can be as quick as 2-5 minutes a day.

@androo - Agreed, a picture helps tie together all your profiles.

@Javo - Agreed and I stated it can be seen as that, point is in most cases it does work though.

@JK - That is one way to do it. Slow and steady wins the race.

@Ben - Yup, had this on the backburner for a while and our convo sparked the motivation for this post.

@ Rodney - Glad you enjoyed it.

@Nishadha - Yup, it can be, so it’s not for everyone.

@ Hye - yup, and as stated, it increases the rate of people adding you back.

Interesting ideas - some of the mass adding and delete ideas make me cringe, but it could be useful nonetheless.

It’s all about finding your niche and hitting it hard.

People are out there who want to meet you, you’ve just got to invest the time! It’s not easy you’ve got to hustle

I find its harder to become an active member in social bookmarking services such as Digg, a lot of the people there are extremely crude.
