Get A Schedule

The importance of a schedule is an overlooked fact. A lot of people think that they can remember everything they are told to do. Soon, those people fine these tasks piling up and then they can’t handle them. Fear not, there is an easy solution to this problem.

Although today’s post will be short, it will be invaluable. If you aren’t using a schedule get one NOW. Basically it will allow you to break your day down into small parts. You can brick off certain parts for certain tasks. As a result you can see how your week will look like and also plan in some time to kick back and relax.

The main importance is that is gives you something to follow. Everyone is tempted not to work when they work online. They procrastinate, and then it ends up getting done a lot later than expected. What a schedule does is it lets you organize your tasks, set goals and then measure your success.

Of course a schedule is only effective if you stick to it. That being said, I have a few tips that have helped me in the past stick to the schedules I’ve made:

Post it - Put it on your wall! The best place is by the light switch, when you leave or enter the room you will see it and be reminded.

Small increments - A huge task doesn’t seem so huge if it is broken down into a lot smaller chunks. Breaking down a 100 minute task into ten 10 minute tasks will make it a lot more managable.

Stay motivated - I like to put up notes that remind me why I need to do something. If I am reminded I am much more likely to stay focused and complete the task!

Just do it- Sometimes starting something new, like getting a schedule, is hard. Just do it. If you do you will thank yourself. There are tons of free web schedules out there that you can use. I personally prefer pen and paper schedules though.

You already have one - A schedule isn’t necessarily going out and buying a book or a program. You can create one yourself. The simplest way is to just break the day down into a time increment on paper and then just chart out your day before it starts. If you can do that, just apply that to a month, and create your own in a text editing program like word. That being said, there are tons of free online ones. In terms of making your own, I’m talking about physical objects. You have the tools to make one already!

Reward yourself - Once you are done a task, schedule in a reward. Don’t over work yourself. Your schedule should find a nice balance between work and play. Remember life is meant to be fun, enjoy it!

I do agree about posting schedule. I practice it myself. However, there are just days that I get lazy to post an article in my blog. I know it’s bad but I can’t help it ;0

Good points, I’ve always found it so hard to keep to my schedules. I do think it’s a good idea to reward yourself for sticking to it.

Yeah man…I’ve been all over this lately…I even had a guest post on another blog about it. Being organized and having a schedule is really the best way to constantly move forward.

It may be hard at first, but once you get it down….it’s great!

@ petitehye - In that case, if you don’t’ want to have a set posting schedule, try writing a few articles in advance to cover those lazy days.

@ Nick - You can do it, I’ve watched you build up a few sucessful sites, and there is no reason you can’t continue to do that.

@ Erik - yup, the reward doesn’t have to be huge, but it makes you feel baetter about doing the task

@ Rajaie - Ha ha, yeah, thats the hardest part.

@ JK - Yup, and you will see your productivity soar as a result.

Thanks man a great post again!!

I am eyeing up a little white space on the wall next to my desk…. looks perfect for the schedule :)

I tied making lists but never made timed schedules for the stuff so it failed a little.

I try to post one article each day, but sometimes I am just too lazy that I prefer watching Youtube videos. But I agree with posting schedules, but sometimes I can’t help myself being lazy.

Having a schedule is a great idea as you can focus on what’s important and needs doing. I write a list at the end of the night for the next day.

I also find it helpful to get the task that I least want to do out of the way first.

Leaving emails to later in the day can help to stop distractions because before you know it …. most of the day ends up being unproductive.
