Creating a “Power” Network

A saying I’ve lately heard is, “Power is attracted to power”. What this means in my mind is that powerful people want to know other powerful people, and as a result create “power” social groups that can be extremily beneficial to be part of. I want to take this concept and apply it to networking within your chosen field to establish better connections.

The concept that can be applied is taking a connection to one larger identity in an industry, and use that identity to meet the other larger identities, in turn using their influence and friends to extend your “power” network even further.

Where to Start

What you want to do to start, is to identify a mid range entity to try an network with. By mid range, I mean they are borderline starts but not quite as big as say JohnChow.

Be active on their website, comment, hell, even write a guest post for them. I have found that offering diggs or stumbles really softens up peoples moods to you. Build up a relationship is step one.

Next, identify more people that you’d like to know that they are in conact with and ask them to introduce you. This way, you are meeting people on the same or higher levels that you can apply the same principal to, but luckily step one is already taken away from you due to the introduction by the mid range contact.

What Now

Now that you have a few mid range contacts that you’ve buddied up to, and maybe a top entity or two in the mix, it’s time to move on to your final destination (the final target you’ve identified to try and befriend).

Hopefully get an introduction or some notice from the target, and move in. Talk with them casually, again, be helpful and always polite. Don’t over assume and know your place. To them you’re just a lowly low to mid range entity, not the superstar they are, so you don’t have their attention yet. Getting this attention takes time, but can be done.

Where To Go From Here

Now that you have one of the top range entitys in your network, you can either rinse and repeat to meet other top level entities or work on developing more mid range entity relationships first.

It is about building a brand. Powerful entities draw other powerful entities to them. They like to talk, and of course like having a power network they can call on to help them earn. If you are associated or known as a friend to the top bloggers, others will seek you out and befriend you, eliminating work on your part (of befriending them) and growing your network.

So once you’re in with one or two top level entities, you can get them to help you in numerous ways. You can rack their mind for tips, ask them for help, and pitch them ideas. Being in touch with these people makes it a lot easier to get your message through than just pitching it out of the blue.

But…

I know there will be that but. A lot of the higher entities have contact forms or messengers where you can occasionally reach them. Of course you can go this route. All I’m saying is that they will be less inclined to pay you notice or care if you take this route versus if you are introduced to them from a mutual contact.

Wrap-up

All this being said, some of the top entities and mid range entities are the nicest guys you’ll meet. Use your contacts for personal reasons, but don’t forget to give back. Everyone has a motive for friendship online, it’s a give and take relationship and you have to make sure to do your part in that equation.

Excellent information Mattaw. I am hoping after a couple of weeks to start really trying to buddy up with other Web 2.0 applications web sites.

I’ve had some limited luck doing this. Garry Conn wrote me a personal email. That I have framed. I can’t wait to meet him and show him the email. I’ll be interested to see if he remembers me. I’ve got some other smaller niche blogs where we communicate on a limited basis. Building relationships is the fun part of this business in my book. Thanks for this for me timely post.

@ Jon - remember to set your end target, or you may loose sight of the objective. Also, don’t get discouraged, networking can take time!

@ Mark - Garry is a great guy. You’re right, building relationships is a lot of fun, and I’m always up for it, drop me an email anytime :D

Great info & post! Whenever I meet a new affiliate, the first thing i try to do with them is build rapport and friendship. It helps establish a basic level of trust, and more importantly, it helps you learn more about the business (like what they do online, how long they’re been in the business, etc.). Build those friendships and business will follow!

Absolutely. Those affiliates can be a powerful tool and even if business doesn’t follow, they can definitely help you in some related venture in the future.
