Breaking Past Unproductivity
You’re sitting at the computer screen devoid of motivation and feel like you just need to do some work. Does this situation sound familiar to any of you guys?
I know it’s happened to me many times before as well. What I want to address today is a few tips about how to get past that hump and start working.
If you’re starting at the screen doing nothing, you’re in what I would call an “unproductive phase.” You aren’t helping yourself or your interests by being in this stage.
Being a webmaster you have to stay focused. The internet offers a lot of distractions and if you’re not careful it is very easy to spend a lot of time being unproductive. If you are at a loss for ideas you can easily fall into a leisure activity that can take away even more time that you could be working on your projects. I want to try to give a way of how I personally overcome a feeling unproductivity and get working.
So, to get past it we have to get your mental juices flowing and your mind moving. So, one thing you can do is start with something easy. Do something you know you can do and is simple. This simple task will get you focused and allow you to move onto the harder ones with relative ease once the task is completed (while still doing some work of value). Some simple tasks I personally do when I’m stuck for ideas is build social media profiles (make new friends), try to network, or just work on some of my affiliate marketing projects.
Another thing you can do is to talk to another person. Sometimes stimulating intellectual conversation can help jog the creative juices of the mind. A stray comment or even a targeted conversation can give you the motivation your mind needs to start working at full speed.
You can also remove yourself from the situation. Go watch TV or read a book. I know you’re thinking this might be counter productive but, if you structure and plan your time (do the activity for a limited amount of time), you’ll be able to come back to what you’re trying to do with a fresh mind.
Is there something you personally do to get your mind moving?

I like to comment on blogs. This usually gets my creative juices flowing.
I get this often if I work too many days in a row…
Even if you need the cash I am learning that you have to find some time away from work…. it actually breeds more productivity.
When I got bored or mentally blank in front of my computer, I turn it off and watch TV or blog hop. Just by doing that, a sudden topic to blog comes in my mind and I immediately open my computer and start posting. That makes my boring days ;0

@ Tom - Good one, that is one of the “easy” tasks I do as well.
@ Forest - Yup, agreed. Sometimes giving yourself some space from work is just what you need to get back to work.
@ Hye - Yup, good strategy. I’m glad its working for you
You’ve got to take a break man. With this online stuff, it’s easy to do it all day everyday, because sometimes it doesn’t even feel like work because you enjoy it.
But, you’ll start feeling it when you’re feeling like a mind numb zombie looking blankly into that screen!
Take a break, read some blogs, or……just get outside, spend time with family, whatever you need to do to break it up a lil bit.
Hi Mattaw, yeah I am glad too. But actually there are some time I stay out of focus and just watch Youtube videos instead and if I found something interesting there, I post in it my blog. Hehehe.
