Blogs: For Profit Or For Pleasure?

profit or pleasure?Do you blog for personal pleasure or do you blog for profit? I have recently been talking with a few friends that have been interested in starting up their own personal blogs. The question I asked each of them is do you want to blog to make money online or do you want to blog for personal reasons.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the two can’t mix, as they often do, but I am saying that you need to clearly define which one you are going to aim for before starting the blog seriously.

By clearly identifying which type of blog you want to start you can add some extra directionality to your thoughts. Instead of perhaps blundering around trying to figure out where you sit in the blogosphere you should instead before you even start try to have a clear notion.

This isn’t saying you can’t change from a personal to profit blog, or vice versa. It is simply saying that you should have a goal for your website before you start out.

A personal blog may take on a completely different feel and advertisers view it differently. It would usually focus less on monetization and more on content. A professional blog on the other hand would focus more on monetization and stay more themed than a personal blog might.

All of this aside, you can still monetize a personal blog and make money from it but it may be in a different way than a professional one. Your personal blog may make some money when you refer products you trust while a professional one will make more off ad space and paid reviews.

So before you start a blog, or your next blog, think about it. Do you want the blog to be personal or professional? What will you pick?

Hmmmmm, my blog is a personal blog about my journey to online profits! :) It’s not a “let me teach you how to make money blog” but moreso a “this is what I’m learning on my journey, I’m wiling to share it with you” type of blog.

I agree, one should have a clear goal, and from the beginning, I just wanted to document my progress and share my findings, be they success or failures. My main goal is to help others like me…the normal average type of guy, by going through the process myself.

On most cases we have to say both… But of course I do not really believe a blog should look very professional and polished in the first place…

@ Rajaie - Yup, so would you say you lean towards one more than another?

@ JK - I love your blog, keep up the good work. And don’t worry buddy, you got the drive, you’ll make it.

@ Melvin - and why is that?

Honestly, I blog for both. Just one question, do you think having my own domain name is better rather than using a free-hosted blog? I really appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

Mainly pleasure. TUK made a chunk last month but very little relative to the time spent on it.

However I do meet loads of people via the blog that turn into profit generators for me. :)

@ Hye - I feel that 100% you MUST get your own domain name. It will create a brand for you, and using a free hosted blog doesn’t give you that level of professionalism and dedication that most people are looking for in a blog.

@ Jason - He he, yeah, network network network ;)

@ Sell Porn Make Money - No one..

well, if you blog for profit it is most likely you will get stressed because your patience levels are low, and blogging for a decent profit takes time. and the majority of us will need time to make a decent buck…. so i think a mixture of the 2 would be ideal

I definitely blog for both but once you have made money it is ahrd to start a new blog without making money in the back of your mind…. even if you tell yourself it’s for pleasure!

I blog for both simply because I love blogging about Internet Marketing/Making money online. That being said, when your blog is about making money online, you have to make money with it in mind! ;)
