A Dying Blog

What exactly does a blog look like when it dies? It starts to loose momentum, posting becomes less frequent, it starts having reader palpitations, and finally it rolls over (dies) when content stops all together.

The effect

The effect is that your readers stop coming by and you drift into obscurity. You worked hard building up your blog and now its gone. It’s a shame to see it happen and I think its finally happened to Vikingblogger.com (VB).

I saw VB as a close competitor for a long time and a good mark of how I was doing. The author had a very loyal following that still pops around.

The site has gone from a great blog to a deserted one. There have been no new posts in a while and before that they were sparse at best.

Money wise:

In creating and promotion your blog you can spend a lot of time, money, or both. By abandoning a blog you are not only letting your readers down but wasting that money. If your blog is going to die, sell it. Let someone else take your work and continue to further it. At least then you get some cash in your pocket.

It’s not irreversible

The good news is it’s not irreversible. If you start to post again you’d be surprised how fast readers will come back. You already have a brand out there so its not a startup its a succession and new growth.

So, if any of you have a blog sitting there dying, get working on it, in the long run, it is worth it.

  1. It’s a shame to let your blog which you had put a lot of time (designing, tweaking, posting, building up some reputation) in it die!

Ok there are time which you can’t write a nice post, for example: your on vacation, your doing exams etc) but I think that you should continuing writing when you’re done!

Don’t let your blog die, is a shame!

  2. Agreed, the beauty of wordpress is you can autopost. So even if you’re on vacation the posts can keep coming.

That being said, posting frequency isn’t that important, as long as its consistent (by that I mean you actually do post regularly) and the content is good.

  3. Personally I don’t like autoposting but that’s an option indeed…

Yes, I got what you mean.. Great content needs inspiration, and inspiration is sometimes hard to find! :p

  4. @ Behrad - it’s a viable option, but the problem I find with it is lack of user/writer interaction because you’re gone. A large part of blogging for me is interacting with my readers such as your self.

  5. I used to actually pace myself with Viking Blogger. There was so much marketing and the thing was absolutely rocking. I really don’t understand why they continue to post like 2x a month because at that rate it’s not even worth it. Definitely a dead blog at this point in time, good post :)

  6. Thanks Jim, glad to see I wasn’t the only one pacing myself with him :D

  7. Matthew: The reason why I don’t like autopost is exactly as you mentioned! The lack of interaction between user/written when your’re gone!
